Members commit to international sanctions and protection of refugees
Tynwald has pledged its total support for Ukrainian sovereignty, democracy and independence.
A motion – approved unanimously by the court today – saw politicians commit to fully support international sanctions against Russia and the protection of refugees.
In a debate on the ongoing conflict – which is now in its 20th day – members condemned the Russian invasion of the European nation.
Today it was revealed that 16 aircraft have now had their Manx registrations cancelled and two superyachts have been removed from the Isle of Man Ship Registry.
They were owned by, or linked with, those who've been sanctioned so far.
Treasury Minister David Ashford said the Island takes its responsibilities seriously:
MLC Bill Henderson, who originally intended to put forward the motion in his name, echoed calls for a no-fly zone over Ukraine.
It's something NATO governments have so far refused to do through fear of being dragged into a much larger, potentially nuclear, conflict.
In light of Russian President Vladimir Putin's comments, about 'de-Nazifying' Ukraine, Mr Henderson had this message:
During the Tynwald debate it was revealed that more than 260 Island residents have contacted government to offer humanitarian support for refugees – including opening up their own homes.
