UK Marine Conservation Society backs motion
The Island is to consider introducing updated EU bathing water standards to bring us into line with neighbouring countries.
However, Tynwald has opposed a call from Onchan MHK Peter Karran to fully adopt the guidelines.
Mr Karran said it was important to protect public health and those who use Island beaches and bathing waters.
His motion had been endorsed by the UK Marine Conservation Society.
However, chairman of the Manx Utilities Authority Alfred Cannan said while he supported the principle, he would not commit to adopting the more stringent standards while it was unsure of the capital costs involved.
