Warning over importance of bees

Isle of Man remains the only place in the world to remain varroa free

Members of the public are being reminded that the importation of bees from the UK is subject to a blanket ban.

Contravention of the ban could result in a fine of £10,000.

The issue was raised by a caller to Manx Radio's Mannin Line, who saw an advertisement from a UK company that offers solitary Red Mason bee cocoons for sale by mail order.

Bee populations around the globe have been affected by the deadly varroa virus spread by mites. 

The Isle of Man remains the only place in the world to remain varroa free.

The Island’s official Bee Inspector, who also doubles as Advisor on bees and beekeeping generally, is Harry Owens.

He says it's critically important that the Island stays clear of Varroa:
