Minister admits current figures are alarming
We won't know the true extent of the damage Covid-19 has had on the Island's economy for some time, the treasury minister has said.
At yesterday's media conference, Alf Cannan was asked about the latest unemployment figures.
There are more people without jobs on the Island now than there have been for more than two decades - 1,347 at the end of April, which is 500 more than there were in March, and over 1,000 more than April 2019.
It's also thought around 1,000 further job losses have been prevented by government's support schemes.
Mr Cannan says the full picture will become clear in time:
The minister also announced there was one new case of coronavirus confirmed yesterday, meaning the total now stands at 336, with 10 active cases.
