Wetherspoons to open its first Isle of Man pub

Pub chain giant to take over 1886 in Douglas

UK-based pub chain Wetherspoons has announced it's to open its first location on the Isle of Man.

The multinational franchise is to take over 1886 Bar and Grill on Regent Street in Douglas from 14 May.

Spokesperson, Eddie Gershon, says the company is 'confident that the pub will appeal to a wide range of people and be an asset to the social scene in the city'.

He added 'all employees working at the pub will be transferred to the new pub and additional jobs will be created'.

The lack of any Wetherspoons venues on the Isle of Man has long been noted by visitors and newcomers to the Island.

The timing of today's announcement has led to many people on social media questioning whether it was a mistimed April Fool's Day practical joke, however Manx Radio has confirmed with Mr Gershon that this is not the case.

Manx Radio has contact 1886 Bar, Grill and Cocktail Lounge for comment.
