Tight battle between Douglas and The Hurricanes

In Week 5 of the Macs Builders Merchants snooker league, early pacesetters Malew travelled to second placed Rockets. Finch Hill Rockets 0-5 Malew
 
Things don't get much better than this, Malew stayed unbeaten and helped themselves to their third 5-0 win of the season. They have won 22 of their 25 frames played so far and currently have a knack of winning the close frames. Three frames went to the final pink and Mark Quinn once again won on the black. Frame scores, Matt Radley 55-67 James Goodwin, Paddy Delaney 41-51 David Quayle, Marek Kenny 50 -64 Mark Quinn and Ron Grogan 50-99 Alec Oates, the Rocket requiring snookers from the brown. Finally, John Spellman 42-54 Eric Drinkwater.
 
Douglas Snooker Bar Wannabes 2-3 The Hurricanes
 
Wannabes may have lost but on actual points scored on the night won easily 368-307. Two black ball frames started off proceedings, both going to Hurricanes, Stevie Cowin 63-74 Jamie Wilson and Paul McKinstry 56-62 Stu Littlewood. Littlewood with a 24 break stays unbeaten and will be rewarded with a handicap cut shortly. Fred Corris handed Nigel Kermode a beating 107-26 to pull one back but Steve Munk ensured a Hurricanes win defeating James Teare 51-85. Dave Corris is Wannabes form player and he made it 4 wins from 5 taking the final frame 91-60 over Chris Dagnall.
 
Jacksons 1-4 Cue Zone Blinders
 
Blinders lost 4-1 in their first two outings but have now won the next two by the same scoreline. The first two frames were shared in this derby match. Nick Heaver 40-70 Ivan McMaw and Kam Virk convincingly 67-17 against Brandon Forrester. Lee Gale then lost his unbeaten record, losing on a re-spotted black to Scott Campion 45-52. This was Campion’s first league win and included a 22 clearance to force the re-spot. The re-spot itself was tense with good safety and nervy pot attempts. Ultimately the black was left close to the yellow bag by Campion and Gale, cueing off the side cushion between the middle bag and black pocket. Unfortunately for Gale it was dead straight and although he potted the black he followed it in. Two more Blinders wins followed, Dave Cavanagh 34-61 Sam Palmer, again a first win for the latter and Paul Kell 40-67 Josh Rigg.
 
Newbys DSB 1-4 St Olaves Musicians
 
Newbys slipped up again, with the Musicians backing up their 5-0 win last week. Adam Dooley 51-81 Mike Doherty and Pat Maher 39-65 Brian Howland put the Musicians in control. Johnny Myers picked up Newbys sole win 78-40 over John Kennish. Calum Gardner apparently suffered seven in offs narrowly going down on the black 55-66 to Peter Collister. Zain Abideen couldn't halt Matthew Dodd in the last, Doddsy making plants, ‘from nowhere’ to take it 46-83.
 
Peel Legion 1-4 Cue Zone Mob
 Peel’s poor start to the season continued with another loss in what was a belated first home match. Tom Curphey making his league debut for Peel drew the short straw in Dave Addinall who was in fine form again though had to make do with a mere 49 break, this week’s best! Final score Curphey 64-102 Addinall. Steve Finnegan made it 0-2 to the Mob, comfortably 14-61 over Don Humphries. Jim Caley couldn’t halt the slide to defeat but he did take it to the pink against Peter Kirkham. Some late snookers from Kirkham helping him win 67-75. Lee Hunt, potting better than John Kelly added another, winning a scrappy frame with all the colours down one end, 26-58. Geoff Hall salvaged a point for Peel in the last, keep it tight to win 62-32 over Steve Oates.
