Mark Cavendish came ninth in the Milan-San Remo in terrible conditions yesterday.
The Manx Missile, who won the one-day classic race in 2009, finished 14 seconds behind winner Gerald Ciolek in the chasing pack.
The 298km race was temporarily halted after 117km.
Because of the appalling weather - snow, ice and rain - team buses had to transport the riders about 50km, causing a two-hour delay, to restart 130km from the finish.
A number of riders, including Tom Boonen, 2011 winner Matthew Goss and Vincenzo Nibali abandoned the race during the break.
