Rugby: Douglas claim big win over Eccles

Vagabonds' resurgence continues (Results: 8 Feb)

Report by Dave Christian:

Douglas took maximum points in their Regional 2 North West clash with Eccles at Port-e-Chee, coming away with a 43-21 win and climbing up to seventh place in the process.

Douglas led 29-7 at half time with first half tries coming from Kyle Martin (2), and Jonty Cope (2).

Nathan Robson added three conversions and a penalty, Eccles staged a second half fightback but Gihard Visagie and Harry Cartwright added further tries for Douglas to make the game safe and Robson converted both to be doubly sure.

Vagabonds' resurgence continues

Vagabonds spritely start to 2025 continued when they beat Dukinfield 29-15 in Counties 3 ADM Lancs/Cheshire to make it three wins from five outings after finishing the first part of the season winless.

Dukinfield took an early lead through a Dan McKinnon try, a Cam Findlay penalty put 'Vagas' on the board and just after the twenty minute mark Findlay touched down for a try which he converted himself to put Vagas in front.

Tom Gascoyne bagged a try for himself on the cusp of halftime and when the teams turned around Vagabonds were 15-5 ahead.

Early in the second half two tries from Dukinfield number eight Mike Connole levelled the score at fifteen apiece.

Midway through the half 'Vagas' struck twice in quick succession - Gascoyne went in for his second and skipper Dan Bonwick sniped in from close range, Findlay converted both for a 29-15 lead.

Dukinfield threw the kitchen sink at Vagas for the final twenty minutes but the defence put in a huge shift to keep them out.

Dominant performance from Vagabonds Ladies

Vagas blew away the league leaders in Womens NC2 North (South), beating Winnington Park 63-0 at Ballafletcher, Maylyn Campbell was once again the 'Vagas' star with a hat-trick of tries.

Vagas raced into the lead from the very start with tries coming from Holly Shea, Sandy Dawson, Maylyn Campbell and Leona McGovern.

Sammy Macdonald added two conversions and Vagas led 24-0 before twenty minutes had ticked over, Freya Crowe snatched the first of her two tries just before half time and the teams turned around with Vagas 29-0 ahead.

There was no respite for Winnington Park in the second half - Becca Hicks and Maylyn Campell both went over early on to extend the lead, with Macdonald converting both.

As the visitors looked more ragged, Campbell completed her hat-trick, Freya Crowe picked up her second and there were also tries from Jules Harrison and Meg Kerwin.
