The Manx Missile completed the 6.4-kilometre prologue course in a time of seven minutes 36 seconds in Saturday’s time trial around the Belgian city of Liege.
His team-mate Bradley Wiggins was the runner up, seven seconds behind Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara.
Today’s (Sunday) stage is a 198km trek from Liege to Seraing.
