Contracts 'required' for public services
The government may be hiring more staff on zero-hours contracts, but it couldn’t provide public services without them.
So says Policy and Reform Minister John Shimmin, who faced questions from Onchan MHK Peter Karran in the House of Keys today (10 May).
Mr Shimmin said 108 contracts were issued last year, up from 88 the year before.
But he defended the contracts – which have been widely criticised for lacking staff protections:

Overnight sailings cancelled due to adverse weather
Rapist who 'terrorised' his victim told his sentence was 'entirely justified'
Complaints process for health system changed
Discovery of oiled birds 'makes a mockery of our biosphere status'
Charges now in place for those sending parcels to the EU
