Should the Island’s domestic rating system be replaced with a services tax?
That’s exactly what a Tynwald committee is investigating and will today (Monday) hear evidence for and against.
Restaurateur David Buttery has called for a unified local services tax to be introduced, which would be paid by all Island residents of working age to 75.
It was his petition for redress of grievance – presented on Tynwald Day in 2009 – and taken up recently by Douglas West MHK Chris Thomas which led to the committee being formed.
Mr Buttery will give evidence at 3pm in the Legislative Council Chamber, followed by Treasury officials Clive McGreal and Andrew Wallis at 3.45pm.
The committee has to report back to Tynwald with its recommendations by October.
