It's hoped the status will support charitable work being carried out by local businesses
'Thomas the Town Cat', who has a Facebook following of over 1,000 people, will be made a 'free' feline of Ramsey.
Ramsey Commissioners agreed at its meeting to give Thomas the status and will be presented with a chain, at no cost to ratepayers, to support charitable work organised by the businesses in Ramsey.
Board member Sandra Cottam-Shea says he is an important part of the high street and although the board can't directly support charities, she hopes this will 'kick start' the work.
Thomas has his own line of merchandise at one of the local shops and Mrs Cottam-Shea says it's 'heartwarming' to see the affection Thomas attracts as people look out for him, has regular 'snooze spots' across Ramsey.
She added the title would be 'symbolic' but would recognise the residents in the town who look after Thomas.
